In 1991, I sold an $85 algebra textbook at a discount from my dorm room at the University of Pennsylvania because students couldn't afford it. That became PennText. Custom coursepacks for professors who wanted to teach their way. The professor keeps the IP. The professor sets the price. The professor controls the curriculum. We handle everything else.

Thirty-five years of that taught me one thing: the best tools disappear. They make the person using them more capable without demanding attention for themselves.

THEN AI HAPPENED.

I was an early adopter. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, all of them. I used them the way most people do: as a faster search engine, then as a writing assistant, then as a thinking partner. And then I realized I was losing my own voice. The machine was faster than me and I was starting to defer to it.

So I wrote rules. A constitution. A code for how I was supposed to interact with AI. Article I: "I will give you agency. You will help me retain mine." That single sentence restructured everything.

I built a brain. A database that holds my thinking, my decisions, my doctrine, my standards. Every AI I use reads from it and writes back to it. Nothing gets lost. Everything compounds. I named the AI partner SAGE and the system LAYERS.

THEN I REALIZED EVERYONE NEEDS THIS.

The 30 million small businesses in this country. The professors trying to protect their curriculum from being swallowed by platforms. The parents watching their kids interact with AI for four hours a day with zero structure. The working professionals who use three different AI tools and re-explain themselves in every single one.

Nobody built the connective tissue between humans and AI. The LLMs are the mouth. Nobody built the operating system for the brain. That's what LAYERS is. And we're building it in public, right here, on The Grid.
